How Does Iron Spark One of the Most Violent Cosmic Events?

Stars are basically machines for turning lighter elements into heavier elements via the nuclear fusion reactions that take place in their cores. But at the very moment this fusion process creates iron, the star goes supernova and releases more energy in a single moment than our sun will produce over its entire lifespan. The resulting explosion ejects all of the elements created by that star into the cosmos. |
